A visit to the Cullinan Diamond Mine is definitely a unique experience. The Cullinan Diamond Mine which used to be known as the Premier Mine is located 40 Kilometers east of Pretoria. Established in 1902. This is a carrot shaped volcanic pipe with a surface area of 32 hectares. The world famous Cullinan Diamond was discovered at this mine in 1905. The Cullinan diamond which was named after the owner of the mine at that time Sir Thomas Cullinan, was the largest rough diamond of gem quality to ever be found. Petra diamonds is the current owner. What is interesting about this mine is that it is the only significant source of blue diamonds in the world.

This mine is unique in that it allows tourists to learn more and feel what is is like to work in a diamond mine. Still being an actively working mine you can depart on an underground tour of the mine where you descent to the depths of about 763 meters. Very interesting but keep in mind it does involve a bit of walking.
For the less adventurous an equally informing surface tour can be booked and enjoyed. If you are interested in purchasing diamonds, there is also a very good quality diamond shop to visit. Pick up for the tour directly from your hotel in Johannesburg or Pretoria.
